Communications and Networking

Communication with others is a fundamental need. As technology grows and advances, so do the methods of information exchange. SRI offers cutting-edge solutions to critical needs in communications and networking, relying on substantial expertise in core research, product development, and commercial deployment.

SRI was instrumental in the early development of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the 1960s, and in 1977, SRI sent the first three-network Internet transmission.

SRI’s interdisciplinary data communication and networking teams integrate new hardware and software technology to provide solutions in these areas and more:

  • Mobile ad hoc networks that allow secure, reliable, and wireless connections

  • Navigation and mapping capabilities, even in urban and subterranean environments that cannot be accessed by Global Positioning Systems

  • Microminiature device design

  • Information processing and data distribution

  • Network communications management, modeling, and simulation

  • Secure communication networks and scalable network surveillance

Staying in Science

Staying in Science is an NSF-funded study exploring how formative science experiences impact the pathways of STEM-interested students from underrepresented groups. By identifying key supports and obstacles in these youths’ pathways towards STEM careers, this study seeks to help practitioners design...

Internet of Things (IoT) Security and Privacy Center

The Center conducts research and development aimed at providing IoT developers, integrators, and users with effective tools and methods for building and managing secure, privacy-preserving and maintainable IoT systems.
