Molecular Physics

In studying molecular relationships and chemical bonds, important experimental techniques include spectroscopy for new practical applications and devices in aerospace, green tech, and other industries.

SRI’s Molecular Physics Program provides government and commercial clients with fundamental and applied research in mass spectroscopy, laser sensors and diagnostics, atmospheric processes, combustion, and atomic, molecular, and optical physics.

Our innovative technologies include:

  • Jet-REMPI: SRI's patented technology uses supersonic nozzles and resonant laser ionization to detect hazardous air pollutants.

  • Molecular upconverters: molecular-sized (not particle-sized) reporters based on rare-earth ion chelates that produce visible light when illuminated by infrared lasers

  • Gas chromatography/field ionization mass spectroscopy (GC-FIMS): allows rapid identification of complex mixtures of hydrocarbons including crude oils or fuels
