Studying Topography, Orographic Rainfall and Ecosystems
STORE helps science students learn about climate change by using geospatial information technology.
STORE provides data and instructional resources on meteorological and ecological impacts of climate change in sections of California and New York State. Data about these areas include recent temperatures, precipitation, and land cover, plus climate change projections for 2050 and 2099. The data are map-based and can be opened in two freely available software applications, Google Earth and ARC GIS Explorer Desktop.
The project also provides adaptable lessons that make use of the data. SRI is examining how science teachers from middle school to community college use these resources to meet their instructional needs, and what professional development strategies are most optimal to bring about effective classroom implementation.
